The College of the Vicars Choral of York Minster at Bedern
Architectural Fragments
by David A Stocker
The publication examines 412 architectural fragments from the Bedern excavations of 1973–80. The majority of these fragments were not cut for the College at Bedern, but were brought to the site as rubble for re-use in successive medieval and post-medieval building campaigns.
Much of the stone was originally cut in the 1160s and 1170s for the new choir and western towers of York Minster. This material can tell us more about the appearance of the 12th century Minster and helps us to date the Bedern buildings which re-used the Minster masonry.
