Rust, Regeneration and Romance: Conference

July-10-2013 – July-14-2013

This conference seeks to engage in an open multi-disciplinary analysis of iron and steel landscapes and cultures, from the ancient to the modern. It looks toward the legacies of both production and consumption and how these metals have influenced all aspects of social life. We wish to explore the relationships that communities, regions, nations share with iron and steel through its functional use, creative and artistic use and its symbolic use. Indicative questions the conference will address are: How are economies and societies transformed by the extraction and processing of iron? How does the environmental impact and legacy of iron and steel sites shape social and political life? How do governments and communities deal with both the expansion and decline of the iron and steel industries? What are the forms and formats of regeneration for iron and steel landscapes and communities? To what extent are global communities connected through iron and steel, economically and culturally? How have the landscapes and cultures of iron and steel found expression through various art forms? How are these landscapes managed and understood? The conference welcomes academics from the widest range of disciplines and wishes to act as a forum for exchange between the sciences, social sciences and the humanities. The conference will draw from anthropology, archaeology, art history, architecture, engineering, ethnology, heritage studies, history, geography, landscape studies, linguistics, metallurgy, museum studies, sociology, tourism studies etc. The conference will take place at the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site.

CIPA 2013 - Recording, Documentation and Cooperation for Cultural Heritage: Conference

September-02-2013 – September-06-2013

CIPA Heritage Documentation is a dynamic international organization that has twin responsibilities: keeping up with technology and ensuring its usefulness for cultural heritage conservation, education and dissemination. Along with these keynote speeches, important ICOMOS International Scientific committees have joined CIPA to organize joint sessions. For this reason a session on Energy Efficiency in Heritage Buildings will be chaired by Peter Cox, president of this committee. This activity will be an opportunity to explore tools supporting the assessment of performance in this important area. Moreover, the committee on Risk Preparedness and the Stone Conservation committee will also provide a platform to evaluate the role of documentation tools for the mitigation of risk to cultural properties and the conservation of stone monuments. Finally, a documentation of World Heritage Sites will be jointly organized with the collaboration of the International Association of World Heritage Professionals. CIPA 2013 will not only be a technology platform to learn about heritage documentation best practices and research, but also a unique opportunity to learn about key initiatives around the world.

Society for Church Archaeology conference 2013: Conference

September-06-2013 – September-08-2013

This year's conference will be held in the ancient cathedral city of Gloucester, where we will be joined once again by the Association of Diocesan and Cathedral Archaeologists. Formerly the Roman town of Glevum, there is some evidence for ecclesiastical continuity at Gloucester from the Romano-British period through to the Anglo-Saxon and beyond, making it one of the most ancient centres of Christianity in Britain. The conference will be based at Gloucester cathedral itself, which traces its origins to the minster church of St Peter, founded within the old Roman fortress around 679 AD. It came under the Benedictine Rule in the early 11th century, before being wholly rebuilt under its early Norman abbots. Much of this late 11th-century work survives in the present church, which was made a cathedral in 1541. On Saturday September 7th, there will be a programme of lectures in one of the cathedral's 14th-century timber-framed buildings, followed by the conference dinner. On Sunday September 8th, we will visit a range of Romanesque sites in Gloucester, including St Mary, Kempley, Tewkesbury Abbey, and Deerhurst Church. As an added bonus, for conference delegates who arrive on Friday September 6th, there will be an additional trip to 13th-century Black Friars church, one of the most complete Dominican friaries in England.

The forgotten Past: post-medieval small finds and their contribution to our understanding of the past: Conference

October-21-2013 – October-21-2013

Once given little consideration by most archaeologists, post-medieval material was the 'stuff machined through' to get to the 'interesting layers' below. However, thanks to changing attitudes amongst archaeologists and also a growing dataset of finds recovered by metal-detectorists and others now being recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme, there is increasing awareness of the importance of post-medieval finds for understanding the past. It is this interest, and research into such finds, that will be highlighted at this conference. People giving papers at this conference have been asked to consider the following questions while highlighting their research. Why record post- medieval material, and are there aspects that can be disregarded or selectively studied? What types were once thought of rare, but are now considered quite common, and does that change how we feel about what we record? What have we discovered that is new, and does this help with future research agendas? Post-medieval finds have greater potential to link objects to specific people or occasions, so does that make certain objects more interesting or important? How does the recording of post-medieval finds advance research? The cost of the conference is £10 for members of the FRG and £15 for non-members. To book a place please send a cheque made payable to 'The British Museum' to Janina Parol, Department of Portable Antiquities & Treasure, British Museum, London, WC1B 3DG.
