US Army Air Force: ‘Eighth in the East’
In 1942 servicemen from the 8th US Army Air Force arrived in East Anglia to take part in the assault of occupied Europe. Seventy years later ‘the Eighth in the East’ project aims to capture, interpret and make accessible the heritage of this ‘Friendly Invasion’. It is to do this by:
This will be achieved through a programme of community engagement and involvement in recording of personal memories and the surviving archaeological evidence. The project will also promote the heritage of the 8th AF as a resource for learning and sustainable tourism through a programme of events, by enhancing the visitor experience and by providing sustainable supporting resources for schools and museums.
A Stage 2 HLF funded application is being developed by New Heritage Solutions so further details will be announced shortly.
