US Army Air Force: ‘Eighth in the East’
In 1942 servicemen from the 8th US Army Air Force arrived in East Anglia to take
part in the assault of occupied Europe. Seventy years later ‘the Eighth in the East’
project aims to capture, interpret and make accessible the heritage of this ‘Friendly
Invasion’. It is to do this by:
Recording and archiving what still exists which is primarily archaeology and oral
Interpreting this material for a wide audience; and
Celebrating how the regional community came together to support the war in Europe,
by acting as a catalyst for events commemorating the 70th anniversary and delivering
a framework for future events.
This will be achieved through a programme of community engagement and involvement
in recording of personal memories and the surviving archaeological evidence. The
project will also promote the heritage of the 8th AF as a resource for learning and
sustainable tourism through a programme of events, by enhancing the visitor experience
and by providing sustainable supporting resources for schools and museums.
A Stage 2 HLF funded application is being developed by New Heritage Solutions so
further details will be announced shortly.
