Greater London Authority

Prior to the 2008 Mayoral Election we received a letter from the incumbent Mayor, Ken Livingstone in response to our letter setting out the importance of London’s heritage and archaeology. Mr Livingstone wrote:

London is always changing, and has been since it first existed.  Archaeology has played a vital role in helping us to understand how and why those changes have happened.

The present Mayor, Boris Johnson did reply to a similar campaign from our friends at the London and Middlesex Archaeology Society (LAMAS). His letter to London’s archaeologists included the following:

As mayor I will work tirelessly to protect London’s cultural heritage and preserve its historic buildings and skyline […] As Mayor I would amend the London Plan to protect a series of our historic views and will refuse planning applications that threaten our heritage sites.
