• Cadw: Welsh Historic Monuments - Created in 1984, Cadw carries out the complete range of responsibilities for the conservation, presentation, and promotion of the built heritage of Wales on behalf of the National Assembly for Wales.


• Royal Commission on the Ancient & Historical Monuments of Wales - The Royal Commission was established in 1908 to make an inventory of the ancient and historical monuments of Wales and Monmouthshire. It is currently empowered by a Royal Warrant of 1992 to survey, record, publish and maintain a database of ancient and historical sites, structures and landscapes in Wales. It is also responsible for the National Monuments Record of Wales which is open daily for public reference, for the supply of archaeological information to the Ordnance Survey for mapping purposes and for the coordination of archaeological aerial photography.

• Stone Pages - The first and most comprehensive online guide to European megaliths and other ancient sites. Here you can find in-depth information on more than 350 ancient monuments, along with high resolution photographs, descriptions, 60-degree panoramic views, a glossary, an extensive collection of links, several message boards and a free newsletter.

• Ancient Scotland Tour - Description of an extensive tour of 207 Scottish megalithic sites, as a work made in coordination with SCRAN: a Millennium project to digitise Scotland's human history and material culture. During the 61 days of the Scottish tour, the authors published an online travel diary, updated in real time, allowing their Internet friends to follow the tour, interact with archaeologists and experts, view images from the journey, and learn about the ancient Scottish people and monuments.

• Ancient Apulia Tour - Italy is most famous for its Etruscan, Roman and Renaissance monuments and buildings. However, there are lots of more ancient sites - standing stones, dolmens and burial chambers - especially in Apulia, the "heel" of the boot-shaped country. Unfortunately, each year a number of these sites are being destroyed. In an effort to make people aware of the importance of this issue and to share with the Internet community the beauty of these ancient monuments, the authors made a two-week tour, visiting all major prehistoric Apulian sites and publishing their travel diary online.

• Ancient Stones of Scotland - A complete guide to the ancient stone monuments of Scotland, ranging from the earliest stone circles to the defence towers called "brochs", built during the Iron Age. On these pages are the photographs (hi and low-resolution) of 182 ancient sites, along with descriptions, maps, 50 panoramic movies, a complete glossary and an extensive bibliography.

• Digging for Vikings -

  The National Museums & Galleries of Wales is pleased to announce the start of the third season of our "Digging for Vikings" web project.

  Over the next three weeks our web pages will follow the progress of excavations at a Viking period site on Anglesey.

  Last year the Digging for Vikings project recovered a prehistoric burial and early medieval occupation. The year before that a massive early medieval enclosure wall was uncovered, as well as the remains of several people discarded in midden deposits beyond these defences.

  This year the team is working to explore a spring that rises within the enclosure, and a proposed entrance way.

  (In our 2000 season we had over 8,500 virtual visitors in the three weeks of excavation, as well as emails from around the world. This web site also received a 'highly commended' certificate in the Channel 4 ICT Award at the 2000 British Archaeological Awards).

  A project to digitise over 20,000 images of cultural heritage material which is held in institutions all over Wales, and to bring those images together as part of a single Web site which will become a new national learning resource, and which will reflect and promote the extraordinary diversity and significance of materials held in Welsh libraries, museums and archives - the "jewels".
