Graham has worked in English Heritage and its predecessors for many, many years, and is currently Head of Characterisation in English Heritage, having previously led the Monuments Protection programme between 1995 and 2002 and carried out excavations of medieval castle and towns. He has been a member of council of the IFA (1995 - 98), the Society of Antiquaries London (1999-2004) and the European Association of Archaeologists (2004 - 10), Visiting Fellow at the Universities of York (2000-2003) and Newcastle (2006- ), and since 2004 a member of LE:NOTRE's Strategic Advisory Board. He has developed and led the EH programme of Historic Landscape Characterisation since its experimental origins in 1993. He has worked on several landscape-based transnational and inter-disciplinary landscape projects, and with the policy implementation of the European Landscape Convention, and has published extensively on landscape concepts and heritage management.
