Appendix 3.4: Sampling strategy for phase I interviews

The quota target list for phase I interviews was as follows:

Total sample size 40-50

To include:

• At least ten people representing each of the following 'attitude groups':

i Those who favour concise but full description of the evidence with minimal analysis and interpretation within fieldwork publication itself.

ii Those who favour concise but full description of the evidence in conjunction with in-depth analysis and interpretation within individual project publications.

iii Those who favour selective publication of fieldwork projects (with less description of evidence) in conjunction with greater emphasis on analysis and interpretation, and more effort directed towards synthesis beyond the level of individual projects.

iv Those who favour brief summary publication backed up by archiving.

v At least five people from each of the following constituencies:

a) contractors;
b) consultants;
c) curators;
d) university staff;
e) museum archaeologists;
f) postgraduates;
g) specialists;
h) active amateur/local society members

• At least 15 women of various age groups (preferably with at least three in each of the attitude categories)
• At least 15 men of various age groups (preferably with at least three in each of the attitude categories)
• At least five people from each of the five regions in the survey
