Introduction
This Index covers volumes 1 - 37 of SOUTH MIDLANDS ARCHAEOLOGY which, until 1983, was known as CBA GROUP 9 NEWSLETTER. It covers archaeological work in the Group 9 (or South Midlands) Region of the Council for British Archaeology. This comprises the counties of Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire and Oxfordshire; until 1976 (volume 6) it also included Berkshire. With the county boundary changes of 1974, parts of Berkshire (mainly the Vale of the White Horse District) were transferred to Oxfordshire.
The arrangement of the Index is straightforward. The year is followed by the page number: thus "72/49" indicates the volume for 1972, page 49. A table giving the years and volume numbers is given below.
County and other abbreviations are, hopefully, self-explanatory. The word "century" is abbreviated by "C" followed by the century number. Thus "C11" means eleventh century. Page numbers in italic refer to illustrations.
Authors of articles in South Midlands Archaeology are omitted.
This index was first published in 1992 as an index on paper to volumes 1-20. This was produced by Barbara Hird, indexer, under the direction of a sub-committee under the Chairmanship of Tim Allen. Volumes 21-37 of South Midlands Archaeology have their own individual indexes. In 2000 the Committee decided to commission an index of volumes 1-30 which was to be available over the Web. We would like to thank Barbara Hird for her painstaking work to amalgamate all the indexes together and Jon Hitchcock for his work to make it available over the Web.
