Welcome to the CBA's Out and About Archaeology event.
In May 2026, join us as we go Out & About exploring the archaeology of our towns and villages, forests and rivers, open spaces and terraced streets! From the 18 - 24 May 2026 you can actively explore the amazing and rich archaeology and heritage across the country by joining one of our guided walks or rides, downloading and following some routes local to you, or even just exploring some of our online trails for the comfort of your own home.
Through digital tours, online talks, downloadable trails and hands-on activities, Out & About Archaeology is the perfect opportunity to discover the archaeology on your doorstep. Alongside CBA-led activity, we are also highlighting events and activities happening across the UK throughout May delivered by a range of organisationn. Explore somewhere new
Take a walk outdoors on online with our new immersive digital walks on our Archaeology Explore platform.
Head outdoors and follow the maps on your phone or take the journey from home by following the map on your laptop.
The immersive platform we have used to create our digital walks is called Geovey and produced by Nautoguide. If you would like to create your own digital walk or trail Nautoguide are offering you the opportuity to create one free map on their platform. What can you discover with our new Eye Spy activity?
This year we've created a fun new Eye Spy activity for all the family.
Designed to get you using all your senses, thinking creatively and looking from the big picture down to the little details, use the prompts to inspire you.
You can use Eye Spy wherever you are - a town, a city, the country, or even online via Street View. Why not have a go in more than one place and see what differences you find.

We also have a range of self-guided walks and on-demand activities available throughout the year. Our Out and About activities include digital content you can enjoy from home.
Archaeology in the forest
We have teamed up with Forestry England to share details of the archaeology you can explore by visiting their forests. From prehistory to the Second World War there is plenty to discover. Click the link below to find a walk or activity in a forest near you.

If you'd like to share details of a guided walk or tour your offering during the month of May you can submit the details here and we will promote your event via the CBA website and social media channels. Our simple submissions form makes it quick and easy for you to share the details.
Share your resources
We also have a resource listing for self-guided walks and activities and digital content such as video tours. Submit your resource via the Festival of Archaeology Resources area and we will promote it during Out and About Archaeology in May and throughout the Festival of Archaeology in July.
Reconnecting Archaeology
Out and About Archaeology was developed as part of the CBA's 'Reconnecting Archaeology' project. Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the project aimed to help connect archaeology to a wider audience and to help break down barriers to engagement faced by marginalised groups and communities.
