How to Submit Your Content to British Archaeology Magazine

British Archaeology, the official magazine of the Council for British Archaeology, is a space for sharing everything from groundbreaking research to community projects, personal insights, and new discoveries. We aim to showcase the diversity and depth of the archaeological world and encourage contributions from a wide range of voices.

What We’re Looking For

We feature a wide range of content that brings archaeology to life for our readers. Here are some types of articles and content we typically include:

  • Research Articles: Do you have fresh findings, intriguing insights, or a project you've been working on? Whether it’s a deep dive into ancient history or the latest tech in archaeology, we’d love to share it.
  • News & Updates: Keep the community informed by submitting news from the archaeology world. Tell us about your project’s milestones, recent excavations, or upcoming archaeological events.
  • Fieldwork Stories: We love hearing about what happens out in the field. Whether it's a community dig or an exciting find from your recent excavation, tell us what you’ve uncovered!
  • Features on Local or Lesser-Known Archaeology: Do you know about a hidden gem or a local archaeological project that deserves attention? We welcome articles that highlight unique and underrepresented archaeological work.
  • Photography & Illustrations: Archaeology is as much visual as it is written. If you’ve captured stunning images, detailed site plans, or reconstructions, submit them to help illustrate our stories!

How to Submit Content

Submitting to British Archaeology is simple and straightforward. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get started:

  1. Propose your Topic:
    • Please create a basic overview of your articles ideas and topics and send it to [email protected]. Please include “British Archaeology Proposal” in the subject line.
    • If we are interested in featuring your article, we will respond with details of deadline options for upcoming editions and work with you to ensure your content is included at the best times for you.
  2. Prepare Your Article:
    • Write your article in clear, engaging language that is accessible to both professional archaeologists and a broader audience. Avoid jargon where possible, or explain it clearly if needed.
    • Aim for 3,500 to 5,000 words for Feature articles, depending on the depth of your topic. However, we can be flexible for particularly detailed or unique pieces.
  3. Meet the Style Guidelines:
  4. Photographs & Illustrations:
    • Submit high-quality images that are at least 300 dpi. These should be original photos or illustrations, or images for which you have secured permission for publication.
    • Include captions and credits for your images that explain what they show, where and who they were taken by, and any relevant archaeological details.
    • We prefer JPEG formats and original, uncropped images. Most regular phones can take good quality images, so don’t be put off if you’re not a professional photographer!
  5. How to Submit:
    • Email your article and images to us at [email protected]. Please include “British Archaeology Submission” in the subject line.
    • If your file size exceeds email limits (due to high-res images), feel free to use a file-sharing service like SharePoint, Google Drive, or Dropbox.
    • Include a short bio (50–100 words) about yourself, and if applicable, your affiliation (university, institution, or community group).
  6. Content Review:
    • Once we receive your submission, our editorial team will review it and be in touch.
  7. Deadlines:
    • We accept submissions on a rolling basis, but if you’re aiming for a specific issue, we recommend submitting at least two months prior to publication. This gives us time to review and work with you on any revisions.
