Festival of Archaeology Open Day at Weoley Castle Ruins

Join us for a special open day, as part of the Council for British Archaeology’s Festival of Archaeology 2023. Learn about the archaeology of Weoley Castle and see some of the archaeological finds discovered at the Ruins.

Meet the Birmingham and Warwickshire Archaeology Society to learn more about their project to better understand Weoley Castle Ruins. They will also have a mini dig for children to explore.

Get creative; make a clay tile inspired by those found at the site or try painting with natural resources like flowers and leaves.

There will be two guided walks around the site with archaeologist Mike Hodder at 11.30am and 2.00pm, tours of the Ruins throughout the day and more fun activities!

£2.00 per person – ticket required for everyone to enter the event. Booking essential.

Places on Mike Hodder walks available on the day on a first come first served basis. 25 places per walk.

Travel south from the city centre on the Bristol Road (A38), and turn right onto Weoley Park road. Travel to the end of Weoley Park road, turn right at the end onto Castle Road and then left at the roundabout to Alwold Road. The ruins are past the bungalows on your right.

There is no car park at Weoley Castle ruins. Parking is on the road.

By Bus

The Number X21 and Number X22 bus from the Priory Queensway in Birmingham city centre. It stops on Alwold Road where Weoley Castle ruins are located. The bus from the city centre takes approximately

By Rail

Selly Oak Station

The closest train station to Weoley Castle is Selly Oak Station. This is 30 minute walk away. It is a 10 minute journey from Birmingham New Street to Selly Oak Station.

When leaving the station take a left onto Bristol Road (A38). Approximately 1 mile along turn right onto Weoley Park road. Travel to the end of Weoley Park road, turn right at the end onto Castle Road and then left at the roundabout to Alwold Road. The ruins are past the bungalows on your right.

By Bicycle
