Take part in our FREE Festival of Archaeology youth event at Chester House Estate!
The Council for British Archaeology has partnered with Chester House Estate for this year's ‘Festival of Archaeology’ Youth Event. Anyone aged 8-16 is welcome to attend!
Join us for a day of discovery with hands-on activities, captivating demonstrations and a tour of the estate. The perfect opportunity to uncover the site’s rich history and learn more about the archive and conservation work happening there today.
This year’s festival theme, ‘Archaeology and Wellbeing’, will be brought to life by a series of exciting activities.
Have you ever wondered what tools our ancient ancestors used? Or perhaps you've heard of flint but can't imagine how an axe is made from it? Join Neil from The Prehistoric Workshop as he introduces you to the art of flint-knapping. You will learn the basics of how to take a piece of flint stone and shape it into a useful tool. Along the way you will learn about our prehistoric ancestors and imagine how they lived in a prehistoric landscape, and you'll get to handle Neil's amazing flint replicas as well as genuine stone artefacts.
The second activity will involve creating artwork which is inspired by the fantastic archaeological objects stored within the Northamptonshire Archaeological Resource Centre. Participants will be encouraged to find inspiration from the artefacts – whether that be the shape, function, decoration or feel of the object – or archaeology more generally in the production of their own pieces. The session will be run by Lisa Lovett who works often with Chester House Estate. Participants will be able to take home their artwork at the end of the day.
Become Building Archaeologists for the third activity by exploring the modern, medieval and Roman site to see what clues the buildings can tell us about how people lived and used the site with archaeologists from the Council for British Archaeology.
