On the ground

Geophysics Open Days, Royal Victoria Park, Bath, 28, 29 July

Multiple dates and times available

Come and see a geophysical survey of an archaeological site and have a go yourself.

Bath and Counties Archaeological Society (BACAS) is going to be carrying out a geophysical survey in Royal Victoria Park, Bath in July. Monday 28 and Tuesday 29 July will be Open Days when we can show you what we are doing and how it all works to give a picture of what is below ground. Then you will be given the opportunity to try using the equipment yourself.

This event is part of the Festival of Archaeology, the UK’s biggest celebration of archaeology. This site is one of those being investigated by BACAS as part of the Bathscape project (supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund).

Clothing and footwear: the weather can be very changeable, please be prepared for rain or strong sun and heat. Stout shoes or boots are recommended.

How to take part:

Archaeology fieldwork is a physical activity but every measure possible will be taken to ensure that everyone can join in. Access may not be possible for people with limited mobility. If you have specific access requirements, please let us know in advance and we will do our best to support you.

Wet weather

The event will go ahead unless the weather conditions are extreme. Please check your joining email for updates or changes to the event.

Royal Victoria Park, Cow Lane, Bath, BA1 2XG, United Kingdom

Additional location/direction information

Participants will need to be able to make their own way to the site. Parking in this area is mostly rather expensive and so far most people have preferred to walk there or take public transport (including the Park and Ride from Newbridge along the Upper Bristol Road or down from Lansdown). There is a bus service from central Bath. Full directions will be provided nearer the time.
