Archaeology Tours at Wittenham Clumps

Earth Trust are offering a special one-hour guided tour of DigVentures excavations at Wittenham Clumps

Archaeologists from DigVentures uncovered the remains of a Roman villa and related buildings during excavations at the foot of Wittenham Clumps, next to the Earth Trust visitor centre. These remains have begun to reveal the story of a Romano-British family who lived and worked the land in the 3rd-4th centuries AD.

From Roman kitchen utensils to the arrival of the first pet dogs in Roman Britain, it was a glimpse into a changing world through an everyday family home and working farm. But the remains that have been uncovered so far only represent the first chapter of their story.

This summer, archaeologists from DigVentures are returning to explore more of the rich history surrounding Wittenham Clumps.

Earth Trust are offering a special one-hour guided tour where you’ll get to:

  • Go ‘behind the scenes’ on the working dig site
  • See the latest findings
  • Find out more about the Roman history of Wittenham Clumps
  • Meet the DigVentures archaeologists, and ask questions!
