As part of year-long celebrations, it was decided to mount an archaeological investigation of the Castle itself, funded by a suite of generous local and national bodies as well as local businesses and individuals—this was truly community archaeology.

Jim is a professional archaeologist and has been active working on archaeology and historic buildings projects across Yorkshire and the North East, and in particular working in partnership with local volunteer groups and organisations on several high-profile public archaeology projects.
