Decoding the dead: new work on Roman cremations at Colchester

Talk expanding on Colchester Castle Museum’s splendid exhibition in 2021 “Decoding the Roman Dead”. Presented by Professor Hella Eckardt, Head of Archaeology at Reading University, and Glynn Davis, Senior Collections & Learning Curator, Colchester Castle Museum.

Hella’s research focuses on objects and what they can reveal about themes such as literacy. Hella has also worked with archaeological scientists to better understand mobility and migration in the Roman world. Working in collaboration with Reading University and others, Glynn Davis curated the fascinating exhibition “Decoding the Roman Dead” which interpreted afresh a number of Roman cremations held by the Museum Service.
