Navigate Northumberland will return to Hadrian's wall for the 3rd year to undertake a challenging 20-mile hike across the highest and most rugged sections of the wall from Greenhead to Chollerford.
The route will pass via Walltown and the crags through to Cawfields Quarry, continuing to follow the wall over it's highest point at Windshields before reaching the amazing views around Steel Rigg and Sycamore Gap. Continuing on the walk will reach the Housesteads fort.
From here it continues into more remote feeling terrain, the walk passes over the summit of Sewingshields before descending via the Temple of Mithras and down into Cholleford to finish off the challenge. A great walk passing many of the great historic and geologically rich sections of the wall, with time to enjoy the wall and its surroundings and put into context the incredible efforts that the Romans went through to build it.
The walk will also allow you to see why it is located where it is, in a great defensive location.
The walk is estimated to take 9 – 10 hours.
Unfortunately there won’t be time to visit all the Roman ruins and forts, but it will wet your appetite to return and spend more time in this great area.
Over the years Navigate Northumberland have had great teams of people join together to undertake this challenge, raising money for various charities or just challenging themselves. The route is not easy but it is possible to complete with a reasonable level of fitness.
