Volunteering with York Museums Trust

York Museums Trust offers a  volunteering programme across its sites, including York Castle Museum, York Art Gallery, and the Yorkshire Museum. Volunteers can:

  • Become Costumed Interpreters on Kirkgate, the Victorian street at York Castle Museum, helping bring history to life through storytelling.
  • Join “Hands on Here!” to engage visitors with real objects from the collections, offering insights into their history and significance.
  • Steward the Anthony Shaw Gallery, welcoming guests into a homely ceramic display and ensuring the safety of open exhibits.
  • Operate Raindale Mill, a working 19th-century flour mill, demonstrating traditional milling techniques in a picturesque setting.

No specialist knowledge is required—just enthusiasm and a willingness to get involved. Volunteers gain valuable experience, build confidence, and connect with like-minded people.
