YAC Working with Gwynedd Archaeological Trust (GAT) to create new Welsh resources

The Young Archaeologists’ Club are working with Gwynedd Archaeological Trust (GAT) to create a bi-lingual activity resource pack focused on Welsh archaeology and heritage, funded by Cadw. These will be launched as part of our 2023 Festival of Archaeology.

There are over 70 Young Archaeologists Clubs in our network, including 6 that operate in Wales, supported by volunteer leaders. We have a long-standing ambition to extend the reach of YAC in Wales, opening more branches and finding ways to serve rural areas and improve our support for bi-lingual and Welsh-speaking groups

The CBA is in the process of creating a bi-lingual activity resource pack that can be utilised by our branches in Wales and provide an insight into Welsh archaeology and heritage for our wider YAC network.

The YAC have over 100 individual activities and resource packs covering a whole range of archaeology, history and heritage-based topics that are free to access on the YAC website: Session Resources and Ideas. Members can take part in all sorts of fantastic, hands-on activities, such as excavation, working with artefacts, visiting historical sites and undertaking experimental archaeology. We also run lots of craft-based activities based on archaeological periods and technology. The new pack will have a variety of different activities suited to ages 8-16.

Working with GAT

We are really pleased to be working with GAT who are based in North-west Wales and who run one of our really successful Welsh YAC branches at Bangor, where activities and events are delivered bilingually.

GAT are creating five new activities for us, which will include delving deep to discover Welsh castles, neolithic burial chambers and Welsh mining soundscapes.

Dan Amor, Outreach and Education Officer and YAC Branch Leader said, “It’s been great working with the CBA to produce this set of Wales-themed, bilingual resources. It’s nice to think that these resources will help other YAC groups engage with our fantastic historic landscape.”

We can’t wait to see what exciting activities GAT develop for our Welsh YAC groups in the coming months. Look out for them and much more during the Festival of Archaeology 2023
