Archaeology is about much more than digging. It can help us understand the landscapes around us, the wildlife that lives within them and the ways people have shaped, used and cared for nature over time.
For this year’s Festival Theme Day, we are bringing together people and ideas that you might not immediately associate with archaeology. Meet experts working with forests, lichens and the Countryside Code, discover new ways to explore your local area and try activities designed to help you connect more closely with nature.
Explore archaeology in your local area
You do not have to travel far to discover archaeology. Historic paths, unusual buildings, old trees, earthworks and place names can all provide clues about how your local landscape has changed.
Our Local Explorer Challenge will help you slow down, look more closely and investigate the stories hidden in a familiar place. Choose somewhere near you, take the challenge with you and see what you can discover.
Remember to follow the Countryside Code, respect wildlife and livestock, leave everything as you find it and only visit places that are open to the public.
