Fair Work First

The Council for British Archaeology is committed to fair working arrangements in line with the Scottish Government’s Fair Work First policy.

As a charity operating across the UK, we recognise that the provision of an effective service requires investment in, and fair treatment of, the people who work for us, and that we should apply these principles to our employment practice across the organisation.

We have appropriate channels for effective employee voice

  • We engage in constructive dialogue with our colleagues to address workplace issues and disputes in accordance with our grievance policy and procedure
  • Colleagues have a monthly 1:1 meeting and a quarterly Performance Support and Personal Development (PSPD) review with their line managers.
  • We have policies in place to support employees in the workplace and have zero tolerance of bullying and other forms of abuse and harassment.
  • The CBA staff and trustees worked together to develop the CBA Behaviours, and strive to apply them to all parts of our work. The External Behaviours can be found here. They are regularly reviewed by the staff team.

We invest in workforce development

  • We have inductions for all new starters, including a programme of mandatory e-learning as part of the onboarding process.
  • All colleagues are required to have clear professional objectives, monitored through PSPD reviews,  to support ongoing development beyond initial training.
  • We support professional development by funding colleagues to complete external training where possible, and maintain an annual training budget to support this.

We take action to create a more diverse and inclusive workplace

  • We have an Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion policy and strategy. This is currently being updated and enhanced, and will include an action plan that outlines the steps we will take to improve inclusivity at the CBA.
  • We support a flexible and hybrid working policy, encouraging part-time contracts and flexible working hours where possible.
  • We provide workplace adjustments, making reasonable adjustments for disabled employees, or those who have a short, or long-term impairment that could affect their ability to work.
  • Actions outlined in the EDI strategy, coupled with our data collection and reporting practices, will ensure we continue to identify, understand, and remove any systemic barriers.
  • We have developed and enforce an extensive wellbeing policy to support our staff team through life events and challenges, including menopause and andropause policies.
  • We have trained Mental Health First Aiders on the staff team to support colleagues’ wellbeing.

We pay our staff the Real Living Wage

  • The charity ensures wages to staff and contracted workers meets or exceeds the Real Living Wage, set through the Living Wage Foundation.

We offer flexible and family friendly working practices for all workers from day one of employment

  • The CBA offers a variety of flexible and family friendly working practices, including adoption and fostering leave. We are committed to adhering to relevant employment legislation across the UK.

We oppose the use of fire and rehire practice and inappropriate use of zero hours contracts.

  • We do not use fire and rehire practices.
  • We do not use zero hours contracts with staff or contractors.
