Festival of Archaeology Launch Event 2025

10:00 AM

Join us for a FREE fun-filled family day for the launch of this year's CBA Festival of Archaeology on and around Belfast’s spectacular Divis and The Black Mountain! In collaboration with the National Trust, discover the amazing history of the site, from prehistoric times to its important role in founding the Ordnance Survey 200 years ago.

Based across two sites - Divis Mountain and the Community Centre at Hannahstown, there will be a whole host of archaeology themed activities for all ages.

What's on?

At this year's amazing launch you'll have the chance to get hands-on with archaeology

Up on the mountain you will be able to take part in:

  • Guided walks of the archaeological landscape and the ongoing archaeological excavations
  • Flint knapping led by experimental archaeologist Tom Meharg
  • Making replica prehistoric pottery with John Martin
  • Storytelling with Janice Witherspoon, with a sensory exploration of folklore and the landscape
  • Get hands on with geophysical surveying equipment

Ceilidh musicians will be playing throughout the day near the National Trust Cafe, so you can even get dancing in and around the archaeology!

Archaeologists will be on hand to answer any questions and explain the role of the Historic Environment Record of Northern Ireland (HERoNI) and HED (Historic Environment Division) DfC. A selection of replica prehistoric pots and stone tools for handling will be on display.

Local artist Kerrie Hanna will lead pottery making workshops throughout the day

Meet the CBA and Young Archaeologist's Club, and learn about what we do, and test your archaeological identification skills
