Heritage Day: Race and Representation in the Archive

6:00 PM

Under-representation of Black communities in local and national archives is a systemic issues that violently hides their stories from historical narratives.  Many archives that do represent them are still plagued by standard practices that value tangible descriptions over the stories of their collections.  Serendipity's Collections Archivist and Digital Archivist will be leading a collaborative workshop about the ongoing work of the Living Archive, exploring the language of documentation and how it can evolve to include marginalised perspectives and ensure the representation of Black communities present in Britain.  For the Living Archive to maintain the best practice of representation, guests will be invited to share their input on how this can be achieved and how British archives can improve to make them feel seen.
