While many people think of World War 2 being fought in Europe, North Africa, and Asia, the Home Fron played just as important a role. Part of this was the ground-breaking Chain Home radar system that guided fighters, bombers, and transport planes home from the theatre of war. Sadly, however, what was meant to help save lives cost thirty-one people their lives just days before victory was announced when a transporter plane crashed into one of the towers at Gibbet Hill.
An archaeological project is underway to tell the story of the radar station, RAF Gibbet Hill, and to commemorate those who lost their lives that fateful day. This walk is a chance to hear about this story, the project as a whole and to learn about a forgotten part of World War 2.
