An exhibition celebrating the enduring human fascination with uncovering the past — and the visceral thrill of discovering objects that link us to our ancestors.
Showcasing remarkable discoveries from prehistory through to the post-medieval times, Treasure! Lost and Found shines a light on Dorset’s extraordinary archaeological heritage. The exhibition reveals the captivating stories behind the artefacts on display — objects once prized by individuals and communities, later buried, forgotten, and hidden from sight for centuries, sometimes even millennia, before their rediscovery.
Significant loans from some of Britain’s most prestigious museums appear alongside pieces from Dorset Museum & Art Gallery’s own collection — several of which are exhibited publicly for the very first time. Together, these objects illuminate the region’s deep history and the lives of those who once inhabited it.
The exhibition explores how these valued possessions — from ceremonial tools and ornaments to everyday items imbued with meaning — came to be lost and how they were ultimately brought to light again. Visitors learn about the modern processes that protect such finds: from archaeological recovery to the laws that govern their ownership and the technologies that continue to reveal new insights.
Through these rediscovered relics, Lost and Found invites visitors to experience the wonder of connection across time — to stand face to face with the echoes of those who shaped our shared human story.
