About the event
Join one of our friendly and knowledgeable guides on a behind the scenes tour to discover the history of Lotherton Hall. During January and February each year, the house undergoes a thorough clean, redecoration takes place, and detailed conservation work begins.
Winter is also when we change our displays and exhibition spaces for our full reopening in March. In our fashion galleries we will host Cotton Connections: From India to the High Street, an exhibition which invites visitors to explore the last 300 years of cotton in this showcase of textiles and clothing from India and Europe. Covering cotton’s important role in fashion, identity, trade, and its relationship to and impact on the environment.
The ground floor rooms will welcome back Homes of the Gascoignes with a refreshed selection of objects and stories related to the former owners of Lotherton. There will also be a new display of Arts and Crafts items across the house, including pieces by William Morris and Dante Gabriel Rossetti.
The tours reflect the reality of a working country house museum and are adapted according to availability of different rooms.
We recommend booking in advance by booking your ticket to visit us, alternatively you can book a spot on the day at the entry cabin.
Please note that during half-term, 11 – 19 February, tours are suspended, and the ground floor is open for self-guided visits.
Visitor Information:
- There are a maximum of 20 places available on each tour.
- Please come to the main door of the house five minutes before your tour is due to start.
- These are behind the scenes tours and areas will not all be presented in the way you would normally see them. Not all areas of the house will be included on each tour, dependant on what works are taking place.
- The tours last just under an hour and the those on the tour will need to stay together under the escort of your guide.
- The tours on Saturday and Sunday afternoon at 2pm are adapted to be more suitable for families.
- There is no other access to the house during January and February other than the advertised tours and February half term.
