Raiding the Bank: An Archaeological Walk around Sutton Bank and Roulston Scar

Join us for a guided walk around Sutton Bank and Roulston Scar, exploring archaeology from prehistory through to the twentieth century.

Neil Redfern will be joined by Miles Johnson (of the North York Moors National Park Authority) to lead a walk in the area around Sutton Bank and Roulston Scar. ‘Raiding the Bank’ is funded by the National Grid, and centres around community archaeology and history projects that explore and celebrate the long defensive and military history of the area. Key locations and events include the Roulston Scar promontory fort, the 1322 Battle of Byland, Hood Hill motte, there are extensive remains relating to WW2 which perhaps tie in with the interesting early history of the Yorkshire Gilding Club.

Meet at the Sutton Bank visitor centre (western car park) https://maps.app.goo.gl/rBodPPdZP5Xg5Mp47  for a 10am. departure.

The walk will follow Roulston Scar south along the Cleveland way, and return past the gliding club, where there is a café and an opportunity for a snack/lunch break. Most of the walk will be on easy paths, but here will be a short off- path section to view some archaeological trenching being led by Steve Collison (Raiding the Bank Archaeologist) in the southern part of the hillfort. The walk will also take in some of the WW2 remains within the plantations close to the visitor centre.

Participants will need suitable outdoor clothing and footwear and may wish to bring something to eat/drink. The gliding club café is an option, although may get busy if there are lots of participants.

The walk will aim to return to the visitor centre between 2-2.30pm.
