CBA North aims to promote a positive awareness of the past and a sense of appreciation for the historic environment, in the counties of Cumbria, Durham, Northumberland, Teesside, and Tyne and Wear. To do this they provide information, facilitate opportunities for involvement, and act as an advocate for archaeology and the work of the CBA.

They cover the whole of northern England from the Scottish Border south to Barrow-in-Furness in the west to the northern fringes of the North Yorkshire Moors in the east. A region that naturally includes a wide and rich range of archaeological and historical sites and has yielded many diverse finds.

Their activities include providing a regularly updated website and a regular newsletter. As well as organising events to provide their members with special opportunities to engage with their local heritage. They act as a hub for information on archaeology in the region and signpost members and other interested people to events, research, and volunteering opportunities. They also work to promote and advocate for the local and regional historic environment, with decision-makers, stakeholders, and the wider public.

The Council for British Archaeology works with eleven local CBA groups in England and Wales, and in Scotland with our sister organisation, Archaeology Scotland. These groups operate separately from the head CBA and manage their own activities and governance.
