Volunteer of the Month: Steph Demetriou
This month, we’re delighted to celebrate Steph Demetriou as our Volunteer of the Month! A recent graduate of the University of York, Steph achieved a Distinction in her MSc Bioarchaeology and is currently exploring job opportunities as she takes the next step in her career.
During her studies, Steph volunteered with the CBA’s casework team before moving on to support the Festival of Archaeology as a moderator. She is also part of the small, UK-wide advisory group for the Festival, where she shares feedback on our website and best practice, suggests new ideas, and helps identify areas for improvement.
Steph has also generously given her time and enthusiasm to support the CBA at events, including the Festival of Archaeology 2026 launch at Westonbirt and Roman Fest at Chester House. At these events, she has helped engage visitors who are curious about archaeology, bringing a welcoming and approachable presence to the team.
What does volunteering for the CBA mean to Steph?
“Volunteering with the CBA allows me to get involved in so many different aspects of archaeology, from supporting the Young Archaeologists’ Club and working on casefiles to moderating Festival of Archaeology events and contributing to the Festival Advisory Group! I particularly enjoy being part of a community of people who share my passion for archaeology, while having the opportunity to help protect our archaeological heritage, inspire the next generation, and make archaeology more accessible to everyone!”
Debbie Frearson, Festival Coordinator, describes Steph as “cool-headed” and “brilliant at feedback for best practice”. Debbie also praised her contribution at the Bradford Festival of Archaeology closing event in August 2026, where Steph was “fabulous with the general public”.
We wanted to celebrate not only Steph’s academic achievements and experience, but also the enthusiasm, insight and commitment she brings to the CBA and her work to make archaeology accessible to the public. Volunteers play a vital role in helping the Council for British Archaeology share archaeology with everyone. Steph’s contributions are a wonderful example of the difference volunteers can make, and we’re delighted to recognise her as this month’s Volunteer of the Month!
