Join us for our Summer Exhibition as we explore the storied history of Hospital Street. Taking us from the medieval era to present day, this exhibition investigates the various people, trades, and buildings of the street.
This exhibition has been created by Nantwich Museum's research group, incorporating findings from our Discover Medieval Nantwich project.
Using archaeological, archival, and mapping evidence, the exhibition begins by exploring the present day echoes of the medieval burgage plots. Nantwich, while popularly thought of as a Tudor town thanks to it's preserved Elizabethan architecture, has a strong medieval history. Thanks to the salt industry, Nantwich was an economically significant medieval town.
Other aspects explored include the Wesleyan Chapel, Sweetbriar Hall, Victorian Nantwich, and the various trades and professions of those who lived on this key street.
