The Classics Department at St. Dominic's Sixth Form College, are currently midway through a Heritage Lottery Funded archaeology project. Our excavation work is centred around the foundational remains of a demolished 18th century (neo-Gothic) folly, which once stood on the grounds of a large estate before the convent school was established. The mound that it sits upon is historically associated as being the location of an Elizabethan armada beacon. Adjacent to the Tower, we have also discovered the remains of possible ancillary buildings, including what appears to have been a kiln or bread oven. Small finds from the site range from the early medieval to the modern era, with a strong indication that the site was indeed occupied during the 15-16th centuries.
On Saturday the 19th of July, our beautiful College grounds will be open to members of the public. This will include the archaeological site itself, as well as our exhibition space within our library building; where you can learn even more about both our archaeological and historical research.
The open day will be family focused, with lots of activities on offer for children. Some of the activities include the following:
- Supervised archaeological excavation in one of our wall-line trenches.
- Archaeological finds identification and drawing sessions.
- Activities offered by our partner Headstone Manor Museum, who will also be present on site.
