GlosArch volunteers will be continuing the excavation of the grandstand of Cheltenham's first racecourse from 2nd - 7th August 2027. The racecourse was active between 1819 and 1842 and the impressive, stone grandstand stood from 1835-42, before it was sold and dismantled and lost to history. Since no images of the grandstand survive, GlosArch have located the site of the building and are in their third season of excavation, attempting to understand its layout and appearance.
We will be on site each day from 10am-4pm, so please drop by if you are on the common. We would be delighted to tell you about what we have found.
