On the ground

Community Training Excavation: Weald Hall, Brentwood

Multiple dates and times available

Situated in Weald Country Park, Weald Hall was constructed in the medieval or Tudor period. It was altered and extended over hundreds of years. The building sat within impressive landscape grounds, much designed by Capability Brown.

Whilst the grounds survive today, as Weald Country Park, the hall was demolished in the 1950s after it was used by the military in World War Two. The later phases of the hall are well known but the location and extent of the medieval manor complex is not fully understood, nor is the phasing of the Tudor Manor House.

This two week excavation (22nd July-2nd August) takes place within the footprint of Weald Hall and seeks to investigate if medieval remains are present and in particular identify any features which further our understanding of the earliest phases.

We have limited spaces to spend a week on the community excavation, digging the site.

If you are visiting Weald Country Park, there is also an opportunity to visit the excavation and see what we are finding.
