Families can follow a nature trail through Thornborough’s Northern Henge discovering the flowers, birds, and insects to be found across all the Henges. created during the Neolithic period, Thornborough Henges are a unique triple henge site with many hidden features which English Heritage volunteers will happily explain Visitors will be able to find out how Neolithic people live through the display of tools, clothes and vessels and children will be especially welcome to pick up and handle the items including a bow and arrow, an axe, flint tools, clothes, bags and bowls. Thanks to the interaction of its archaeology and nature, Thornborough’s Northern Henge is the best preserved of the unique triple henge monument that is Thornborough Henges and one of the best in the UK. This Henge, also known as ‘wood henge’ or Camp Wood, has been planted with trees which has preserved it and many of the plants here are typical of an ancient woodland. Follow the signposted path on the right, through the reserve to the last gate onto the road, cross the road and enter the North Henge field via pedestrian gate. The trail starts at the entrance to the henge Look out for English Heritage volunteers. The path from the nature reserve is flat however the field in which the event starts is rough and uneven, The trail follows the paths inside the henge but is uneven with exposed tree roots. Off the path there are steep drops so children under 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult and everyone mus keep to the paths. There is no first aid facility or toilets on site.
