Hands-on Archaeology: Finds from the Abbot’s Kitchen

Join us at Glastonbury Abbey for hands-on archaeology themed sessions in the Abbot’s Kitchen as part of the CBA Festival Council for British Archaeology. Taking place on Friday 31 July and Saturday 1 August, from 11:00am to 3:00pm, these informal drop-in sessions invite families to explore real archaeological material from the Abbey’s 2013 excavations.

Get up close to finds including fish bone from the 2013 Abbot’s Kitchen dig and investigate them using magnifying glasses, tweezers and petri dishes, just like an archaeologist. These sessions provide a unique opportunity to discover what small fragments of material can reveal about medieval life at the Abbey, including food, daily routines and the surrounding environment.

Inspired by this year’s festival theme, “Archaeology and Nature,” the activity highlights the important links between people, the natural world and the archaeological evidence they leave behind. These sessions are included with admission, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
