Tucked beneath the A1 motorway, the Welwyn Roman Baths is one of Hertfordshire’s hidden historic treasures - a Scheduled Ancient Monument and part of the Dicket Mead Roman villa complex.
Discovered in 1960 by the late local archaeologist Tony Rook, the site was excavated by the Welwyn Archaeological Society[EG1.1], revealing a well-preserved Roman Bath House, once part of a much larger villa dating back to the early third century.
The 2nd Annual Herts Archaeology Festival is run in partnership with Welwyn Archaeological Society. The event includes talks by Dr. Kris Lockyear, Chair of Welwyn Archaeological Society and Senior Lecturer at University College London, stalls from museums and archaeology groups from the region, and family friendly activities allowing visitors to learn more about archaeology.
Inspired by Tony Rook’s legacy, this second annual fair is the culmination of his long-standing work with Historic England and Sherrardswood School to explore and promote the site’s heritage.
