Come and join the People of The Peak team at the amazing site of Magpie Mine as we celebrate this year's festival theme of nature with a fun filled and informative afternoon. Help us to discover and record the rich diversity of plant species on the site including some nationally rare species. Find out why some of these species grow here, their uses past and present and how careful management of the site can protect both them and the site for the future. Learn more about the Mine itself, a protected Scheduled monument because of the national importance of the Engine House, with volunteers from the Peak District National Park and Peak District Mines Historical Society.
Come and explore our new monitoring app, join in with our ecology and nature surveys and find out how you could be involved in future volunteering activities. No previous experience or knowledge is needed, we'll provide all the information and resources you need,
Take a guided tour of the sites buildings or to find out more about the plants and how they were used as medicine for the miners and their family with our local herbalist.
All the activities are free as our project, People of the Peak: Past, Present and Future, is funded by the National Heritage Lottery Fund. Donations to the Peak District Mines Historical Society who manage the site are welcome.
Activities start with a chance to sign up for some activities and tours, and an official welcome at 2.15pm. You can come for the whole afternoon or just pop in for an hour or two.
The programme includes ecology surveys throughout the day with a chance to try out I-naturalist and the family friendly Seek app along with ID sheets for butterflies, bees, insects, and plants.
Specific tours and activities to include:
2.45pm Introduction to the plant species on site
2.45pm Introduction to Scheduled monuments and their monitoring
3pm and 5pm - Mining and Nature tours - lasting approximately and hour - exploring the whole site with Mine expert Andy Gillings who will also include a little information on how the miners affected today' landscape. Good footwear is essential.
3.30pm and 5.30pm Salve making and herbal tea tasting
All activities are subject to change, depending on the weather and volunteers available.

Additional location/direction information
Parking is available on the roadside, please be mindful of other drivers and pedestrians when parking. The lower site has a flat natural path so is accessible but parts of the site are on uneven and steeper ground. There a basic toilet facilities but there is not an accessible toilet or changing facilities on site.
