Make Pottery Like a Roman!

Celebrate the Festival of Archaeology 2026 by stepping back in time and discovering the art of Roman pottery in this fun, hands-on workshop for children.

Pottery was an essential part of everyday life in Roman Britain. From cooking pots and bowls to storage jars, skilled craftspeople created beautiful and practical vessels using simple materials and techniques. During this workshop, you'll learn how Roman potters shaped and decorated their creations before having a go at making your very own Roman-style pot from air-dry clay.

This year's Festival of Archaeology theme is Nature, so we're encouraging everyone to bring along a few interesting leaves, grasses, flowers or other natural treasures to use as inspiration. You can press them into the clay to create unique patterns and textures, just as people have used natural forms to decorate pottery for thousands of years.

Once you've finished, you'll be able to take your handmade pot home to dry and display – a wonderful keepsake to remind you of your archaeological adventure.

The workshop is suitable for children of all abilities, with guidance provided throughout. It's a fantastic opportunity to get creative, learn about Roman history and celebrate our shared heritage through making.

The £5 booking fee helps cover the cost of the air-dry clay and all workshop materials. Every ticket purchased also supports the work of Wareham Town Museum, with all proceeds going directly towards caring for and sharing our local heritage.

Please note: Tickets are only required for children taking part in the workshop. Accompanying adults do not need a ticket but must remain with their child throughout the session.
