Understanding the Archaeology and Nature of Thornborough’s Central and Southern Henges

This tour, by English Heritage volunteers, of the Central and Southern Henges explains how archaeology and nature support each other. These two henges are part of the unique triple henge site of Thornborough Henges Thanks to the composition of the Central Henge banks, it is covered in rare ancient magnesium limestone grassland and the whole area attracts birds, butterflies and insects. The tour explains how nature and archaeology interact and shows you many of the hidden archaeological features that are present throughout the site. The central henge gives you the clearest idea of how the henges would have appeared in Neolithic times and its relationship to the now invisible cursus, whilst nearby bronze age barrows can be found. The southern henge is being reclaimed by nature and has a number of significant features that are hidden from view, This is a free event and there is no need to book.
