Thanks to the interaction of its archaeology and nature, Thornborough’s Northern Henge is the best preserved of the unique triple henge monument that is Thornborough Henges and one of the best in the UK. Your English Heritage volunteer guide will take you on a walk that integrates the archaeology and nature to be found there. This Henge, also known as ‘wood henge’ or Camp Wood, has been planted with trees which has preserved it and many of the plants here are typical of an ancient woodland. The amazing henge banks are 4m high in places with a 4m deep inner ditch and you will learn about the exciting discoveries found in the entrance field as well as the now destroyed important Iron Age features. This is a free event and no booking is necessary

Parking is at Nosterfield Nature Reserve, Moor Lane West Tanfield. What3words location: ///livid.caps.sailing . Follow the signposted path on the right, through the reserve to the last gate onto the road, cross the road and enter the North Henge field via pedestrian gate. The tour will meet by the Guardianship panel near the pedestrian gate at the entrance to the north henge site. Allow at least 15mins to walk from the reserve to the North Henge field.
