Unearthing Roman Finds from New Copse, Brockenhurst

Drop in to St Barbe Museum + Art Gallery to explore hundreds of newly unearthed Roman finds from a local archaeological dig and discover how archaeologists use objects to uncover the past.

Volunteers from the New Forest History and Archaeology Group (NFHAG) New Copse Excavation at Brockenhurst will be on hand at the museum explaining the archaeological process from digging to cleaning to recording.

Evidence for Roman occupation in the New Forest is sparse, however excavations at New Copse have revealed features and material culture associated with a Roman settlement site, with evidence of a possible villa-type building nearby. An early Roman round-house, ovens and tesserae production have been also discovered since excavations started in 2017.
