Community Archaeology Dig on Carnival Day, Sunday 26th July!
As part of this year’s Glapwell Carnival and the Festival of Archaeology, we’ll be digging into Glapwell’s past on the sports ground, the site of the former Glapwell Hall.
Glapwell was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, while later medieval charters describe a manorial complex, chapel and other buildings associated with the site. The Hall developed and changed over many centuries before finally being demolished in the early 1950s.
From 10am on Carnival Day, a community excavation supervised by four experienced archaeologists will investigate the Hall’s Georgian canted bay. We’ll be looking for surviving floors, foundations and evidence of earlier structures beneath the later part of the building.
No previous experience is needed. Volunteers will be guided and supervised throughout, although the necessary participation forms must be completed before digging.
