In 2022, following a discovery by a metal detectorist, archaeological excavations revealed one of the largest groupings of Iron Age metalwork ever discovered in England. Two separate deposits, dubbed ‘Melsonby Hoards 1 and 2,’ were uncovered. Both hoards include vehicle parts, horse tack and other fascinating objects.
This talk will introduce the hoards, some of the similarities and differences between them and it will focus particularly on the preservation of Hoard 2, a ‘block’ of interconnected material that measured 1.10 min long, 70cm wide 40 cm deep and weighed approximately 210 kg when it was removed from site.
