Hello, my name is Grace McCallum. I am eighteen years old, and I live in Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex, with my mum, dad and sister. We live five minutes away from the beach, so we are always going for walks. It was on one of our many walks that I first became interested in finding things, which then led on to me finding out more about archaeology. I found different sized fossils, whalebones and many sharks teeth, the biggest being a megalodon (A megalodon is an extinct species of shark which lived between approximately 23 – 3.6 million years ago. Its name means ‘big tooth), tooth, which measures three inches. Larger ones have since been found in my area. I liked looking at history and different historical events, so I combined these interests and researched how to get involved in Archaeology.

I joined my local Young Archaeologists’ Club (YAC) at the age of twelve, and at sixteen I was able to become a young leader. During our sessions we are able to learn about different times in history, discuss events and organise activities and open days. We have been invited on a few excavations in our area and helped with the cleaning of artefacts.

Part of my responsibilities as a Young Leader are to help with organising the special open days and events, arrange activities, and maintain the health and safety of our younger members.

My interest and knowledge of archaeology is continually growing, and I look forward to furthering this knowledge as I continue my journey.
