Northern Ireland Archaeology 2030 Teacher Survey Launched

Archaeology 2030 is a collaboration between people and organisations working in archaeology in Northern Ireland. It sets out recommendations to deliver our vision for archaeology in Northern Ireland. We want archaeology to be accessed and valued by as many people as possible, led by a sector which is healthy, resilient and connected. This vision is being delivered through eight working groups drawn from across the sector. Working Group 6 focuses on engagement and outreach and enabling the wider public to know about, see or participate in archaeology. The working group aims to: 

• Raise awareness of the value of heritage archives

• Champion the potential for research and publication from existing archives and records  

• Initiate community engagement projects that explore and enhance the value of heritage archives   

• Develop a more proactive approach to explaining how heritage contributes to our economy, our community identity, our sense of place, our tourism, health and well-being

• Create opportunities to engage with archaeology in the commercial sector/ through development-led projects  

• Ensure that the Research Framework approach is publicly accessible and understood, particularly for non-archaeologists  

• Develop projects to harness the potential for archaeology to contribute to education, community and tourism/ rural development.  

We need the help of teachers in Northern Ireland to find out more about archaeology in education. We are interested in understanding how teachers use, or could use, local archaeology in their teaching and invite you to complete our survey to share your experiences.  

The survey should take about 15 minutes to complete and is open to teachers in primary and post-primary schools in Northern Ireland. You don’t need to have taught archaeology before, we are interested in all perspectives. You can access the survey via the link below:

The deadline for responses is Wednesday 30th September 2026. Your responses will help shape future resources, training, and opportunities to support schools and we really appreciate you taking the time to complete the survey.
