Festival of Archaeology at Chedworth Roman Villa

Runs throughout festival

Do you have the curiosity, patience and persistence to be an archaeologist? Join us for demonstrations, re-enactments and archaeological activities to find out.

From 13-28 July 2024, Chedworth will be hosting several events and activities to tie in with the Festival of Archaeology, an annual festival coordinated by the Council for British Archaeology.

22-25 July 2024: Come and see how our conservation team cleans some of the finest mosaics in Britain.

13, 15, 21, 24 & 28 July 2024: Our knowledgeable volunteers will guide you as you handle genuine and replica Roman artefacts.

18, 19 & 25 July 2024: Chat to our expert about what's happening on the South Range, one of Chedworth's most intriguing puzzles.

20 July 2024: National Trust Archaeologist, Martin Papworth, will be visiting Chedworth Roman Villa to share the story behind the discovery of a mosaic that is changing the way we see the end of Roman Britain.

27-28 July 2024: Find out what happens after archaeologists finish an excavation. Learn about the meticulous process of recording each find and understand how objects help us to piece together the past.

On selected days there will also be a demonstration of an archaeological dig where ‘discoveries’ are made before your eyes.

Pack a picnic and enjoy a relaxing day of games, puzzles, dress up and more.
