Hyde900 Festival of Archaeology Winchester 2024

Become a medieval monk or a master tiler! See how a community archaeology project has bought Hyde Abbey back to life. Hyde900 will be running workshops with something to appeal to all ages. with a variety of experts to tell the stories uncovered during the investigations. Volunteers can step into the shoes of a monk making a seal for authenticating a grant to be signed by the abbot, or practicing calligraphy skills.. Learn how to become a master tiler producing floor tiles for the monastic building. Take away samples of your work or await your tile to be glazed and fired.

In conjunction with Hampshire Cultural Trust he city museum will host a display of finds from the church and cloisters which will illustrate how the abbey site has changed from prehistoric times to the modern day. Dr John Crook will be bringing the results of the digs together to reimage Hyde Abbey when it was one of the most important monasteries of the land.

Finds Display:

See the finds from the gardens of Hyde householders whose gardens were dug in the community digs of 2016 to 2023

The key finds from the 2016 to 2023 community digs will be exhibited to illustrate the history of the area of Hyde once occupied by Hyde Abbey, the final burial place of Alfred the Great. They will tell the story of this area of Hyde from prehistoric to modern times. Free! No need to book!

Tile making:

Make a tile the medieval way! Using the traditional methods children, and adults of all ages can make a true replica of tiles found on the site of Hyde Abbey. The fee includes the glazing and firing. Open to all ages! The moulds (“stamps”) that you will use are based on the patterns of the medieval tiles found during the community digs over the years. No skill is required! As in medieval times, you have to be patient as the tiles need to dry for up to 3 months before they can be safely fired.

Seal Making:

Make a true replica of a seal of the abbot of Hyde that is attached to a lease of Abbots Worthy to Richard Eric Joan in 1538. Open to all ages, your seal will be affixed to a parchment that will be certified as a true replica by the current abbot (or his stand-in!) Special family rates are available. The workshop takes place on Sunday 21 July. Bookings are strongly recommended as palaces are limited. Seals can be made from sealing wax, beeswax, the same material as the of the original in the archives of Winchester College, or air drying clay. The seal will have through the centre a slip of parchment which will be joined to the parchment certificate. Children can also make a wax crayon rubbing of the appearance of the seal.

Calligraphy:

Meet one of Winchester Cathedral's team of Scribes, watch a demonstration of calligraphy skills and then have a go at calligraphy under their expert guidance. Minimum age 10 years. Spaces are limitited so early application is recommended via https://www.hyde900.org.uk/events/calligraphy/

The workshop is suitable for all with an interest in calligraphy, including beginners. Pens and paper will be supplied. Participants will be using Pilot Parallel pens which are suitable for right and left-handed users.

Talk:

Hear Dr John Crook talk at St Bartholomew’s church Hyde at 7.30pm on Saturday 20th July entitled “There’s a monk at the bottom of my garden!” He will describe how the Hyde900 community project has revealed the plan of Hyde Abbey and how we now understand so much more about the architecture of the buildings. Dr John Crook has had an illustrious career as an architectural historian, archaeological consultant, and photographer, and has been Hyde900’s archaeological consultant since 2016.
