Excavations within the Saxon Minster Precinct at Chewton Mendip, Somerset

Philippa Osborne talks about the Community Archaeology Project on the Saxon Minster Precinct at Chewton Mendip, Somerset.

What began as a hunch that the curvilinear boundary round the parish church at Chewton Mendip might relate to an early Anglo-Saxon minster foundation, has grown into an 11 year project involving geophysical survey, excavations, documentary and environmental study and the establishment of a comprehensive medieval pottery fabric type series. This presentation showcases what can be achieved by a community archaeology group with limited outside help and equally little funding, but with an enormous amount of talent, enthusiasm and dedication!

Thornton-le-Street History Group - RTTP is delighted to welcome Pip Osborne to give a talk about her community group founded in 2009 that is centred on Chewton Mendip in Somerset. Its purpose is to explore and research the landscape in the parishes of the Chewton area from both an archaeological and an historical viewpoint. It is project-based with members suggesting areas for research. The activities include landscape analysis, earthwork and geophysical surveying, excavation and test-pitting, old map study, documentary research, workshops and standing buildings study.
