Considering what a prominent and iconic building Richmond Castle is, surprisingly little archaeological work has ever been done there, meaning we know dates and names but almost nothing about the lives of the people who lived there: from kings and great barons down to the peasants and villeins. In summer 2021, as part of a year-long celebration of the 950th anniversary of the castle’s construction, the local community came together to remedy this. Over the course of a three-week excavation, their findings re-wrote our understanding of Richmond’s earliest years.
