On the 11th November 2019 a section of the curtain wall at Lewes Castle suffered a catastrophic collapse, resulting in extensive property damage and the loss of a significant section of the surviving curtain wall. Since that time, HB Archaeology & Conservation Ltd have been involved in an ongoing programme of archaeological recording, from an initial programme of emergency salvage and clearance work in the weeks following the collapse to the wall’s partial reconstruction, which is currently underway.
This talk aims to tell the story of this unprecedented event and what we have gleaned from the work carried out so far.
